Breguet Classique 5237BA 2005 [Preowned]
Overview
Breguet is one of the Swiss watchmaking's oldest houses. However, the brand was facing turmoil and distress - and new creativity and innovation was required to reinvigorate the brand. Daniel Roth was brought in as master watchmaker, teaming up with brand director François Bodet to create magnificent high complications.
The Classique 5237 continues where Roth's earlier 3237 left off - the design DNA is pure Breguet. Roman numerals, engine-turned dial, straight lugs with fluted edges - all mark a combination of elegance. But while the 38mm case wears larger than the 3237's 36mm, it's still wore perfectly. Inside the timepiece - beats a Lemania 2310 chronograph movement, elevated by hand finishing that is truly remarkable. Chamfered angles, Geneva stripes, mirror polishing - no surface is left unadorned.
Breguet and Lemania shared a connection in that period too - the former owned the latter for a time. Maybe that explains how this watch feels so cohesive in vision. Breguet was putting their supply chain to work in one holistic package. Production wasn't capped, due to the intensive labour for each watch, not many were made. Each individuall watch was numbered, like any proud historic maison would do.
However you chart its history, the 5237 represents a bygone era of 20th century watchmaking few can match. For lucky collectors, it recalls a sleeping giant awakened to its true identity once more.
The reference is 5237 is discontinued and no longer produced.
