Overview

The white dial 226570 — referred to as the "Polar" within the collector community — has consistently commanded a secondary premium over the black dial variant at equivalent papers dates. The original Explorer II launched in 1971 with a white dial, and that configuration has maintained its historical resonance in pricing across every subsequent generation.

The physical specification is identical to the black dial: 42mm Oystersteel, fixed 24-hour bezel, Oyster bracelet. What changes is the reading surface — the lacquer white dial shifts the character of the watch considerably, reducing the contrast between the dial and the case and making the orange 24-hour hand the dominant visual anchor. In natural light, the Polar reads more clearly than the black-dial variant; in low light, the relationship reverses.

Calibre 3285, 70-hour power reserve, independently adjustable local hour hand — identical movement specification to the black dial variant.

The Polar commands a consistent secondary premium over the black dial 226570 on equivalent condition pieces. We see the Polar as the better long-term hold between the two for buyers indifferent to dial colour, on the basis of sustained secondary demand relative to supply. This piece is currently sold out, complete with box and papers dated March 2026, at RM49,500.
