Overview
The 179173 Lady-Datejust was the reference Rolex ran for the better part of two decades before the 279173 update modernized the case geometry and introduced Calibre 2236. The 179173 is the 26mm iteration — a case size Rolex has since moved to 28mm with the current generation — in silver with diamond markers on the Jubilee bracelet. For buyers who prefer the older generation's proportions, or want the Lady-Datejust at a meaningful step below current retail, the 179173 remains a coherent acquisition.
The case is 26mm with the Jubilee bracelet in Oystersteel. The dial is silver with 10 brilliant-cut diamond hour markers; the Cyclops lens magnifies the date at 3 o'clock. At 26mm, the case reads smaller on the wrist than the current 279174 at 28mm — the difference is perceptible, and buyers who prefer a more delicate presence on the wrist tend to favour this older case size.
Papers dated November 2013 mean the ownership history is fully traceable from first sale — an important assurance at this age. Very good condition on a 13-year-old piece reflects considered ownership; surface marks at this stage are expected, and their relative absence speaks to how the watch was used. The complete set with original box and documentation intact is the exception rather than the rule for a Lady-Datejust of this vintage.
At RM35,000, the 179173 represents a value proposition against the newer 28mm Lady-Datejust, with the tradeoffs being the older 26mm case proportions and Calibre 2235 (48-hour power reserve, predating the Syloxi hairspring of the 2236). We are currently seeing complete-set 179173 Lady-Datejust examples hold steady at this price tier; documented pieces at this age do not depreciate significantly further. Preowned, very good condition, complete with original box and papers dated November 2013, at RM35,000.
