Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch 1861 Hesalite 311.30.42.30.01.005 Discontinued 2019 [Preowned]
Overview
When Omega replaced the Calibre 1861 with the 3861 in 2020, the upgrade was genuine — Co-Axial escapement, METAS Master Chronometer certification, 15,000-gauss magnetic resistance. What changed alongside it was the movement's lineage: the 1861 is derived directly from the Lemania 1873 ébauche that powered the watch worn during Apollo 11 in 1969; the 3861 is a new design. The 311.30.42.30.01.005 is the final production generation of the Moonwatch with that original movement, and for buyers who regard the calibre's history as part of what they're acquiring, that distinction is the entire argument.
The case is 42mm stainless steel with the asymmetric crown-at-2 construction and a black anodized aluminum tachymeter bezel. The dial is black with three sub-registers at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock — running seconds at 9, 30-minute counter at 3, 12-hour counter at 6. The Hesalite crystal is the historically correct specification: acrylic, scratches more readily than sapphire, doesn't shatter — the reason NASA retained it after testing in 1965. No date.
The Calibre 1861 is a hand-wound column-wheel chronograph with approximately a 48-hour power reserve and COSC certification. It has no Co-Axial escapement, no METAS certification, and no meaningful magnetic resistance — areas where the 3861 is plainly superior. For a buyer prioritising movement specification, the 3861 is the stronger watch. For a buyer who wants the movement that went to the moon, the 1861 is the only reference.
The 311.30.42.30.01.005 sits in a defined secondary position: less technically capable than the current 3861 generation but discontinued, historically connected, and — in complete form — increasingly difficult to source. Against a brand-new 3861 Hesalite (310.30.42.50.01.001), this reference costs meaningfully less while offering what current production cannot: the original calibre lineage and the collector's set with NATO strap, Velcro strap, and strap-change tools that Omega did not carry forward to the 3861 generation. We are currently seeing documented, complete 1861 examples hold firm secondary values; the premium for original-set completeness on discontinued references is real and consistent. Preowned, excellent condition, complete original set with box and papers dated September 2019, at RM18,500.
