Overview
The Rolex GMT-Master, introduced in 1954, was born from a collaboration between Pan Am and Rolex to create a watch displaying two time zones simultaneously. This innovation addressed the growing need in commercial aviation for a standardized timekeeping system as pilots frequently crossed time zones. The GMT-Master has since become one of Rolex's most iconic models, maintaining its popularity and desirability over the years.
In 1988, Rolex released the GMT-Master ref. 16700, featuring a more elegant design compared to its predecessor. This model, powered by the cal. 3175 movement, offered a 48-hour power reserve and the ability to display two time zones. Despite being produced alongside more advanced models until its discontinuation in 1999, the ref. 16700 has become highly sought after by modern collectors, particularly the rare "SWISS only" dial variant produced from 1997-1999 with LumiNova luminescent paint.
